Faux Wood Blinds Installation Adjustment Tips

Installation and shortening of Faux Wood Blinds
Before beginning the installation process, determine where you would like the window blind mounted. Some mount them inside the window frame while others choose to screw them in on the outside, so the blind hangs in front of the window rather than inside the frame. Check for rotten wood or weaknesses where you plan to screw in the mounting brackets. This should be taken care of prior to installation.

Next, attach mounting brackets as the window blind manufacturer specified. Depending on the design, these directions may vary slightly. Most include the hardware you need for a complete installation. Once the brackets are in place, slide in the head rail and secure any retainers.
After installation, check the wood blind for strength. Try the adjustment strings a few times and make sure the mounting brackets don’t bow or bend. If the blind feels sturdy, then you are all done! If you notice weaknesses, try disassembling to find the cause.

Size Adjustments
The first step to adjusting your faux wood blind is to determine how many slats should be removed. This is very important, so double check your sizing. The best approach is to measure by the slat rather than by the size. Count up how many should be cut, then subtract one slat from that total. If you are doing multiple windows blinds at once, or even if you prefer to be certain, write down the number that need removed.
Next, extend the window blind to its fullest length and remove it from the window. Be careful when doing this to avoid bending or breaking of slats. It might be helpful to have someone help carry the extended blind, and keep a clear path to your work space. Once you have the wood blind laying flat on a table or counter top, search the bottom for plastic plugs. Using a screwdriver or similar tool, carefully remove the plugs. Store them somewhere you can easily find them later.

Once you have access to the guide strings, find the ones that are responsible for up and down movement. Cut each adjustment string just above the knot. You may need something to pull the knots out for trimming, such as pliers or tweezers. Now that you have a clear path, remove the required number of window blind slats (reference your notes if you wrote the quantity down).

Replace the bottom rail by sliding it up to the new bottom slat. Retie the string knots, taking care to secure them as close to the bottom rail as you can. Leave no less than five inches of string below each knot and cut the rest. Tuck the spare cord into the bottom rail and replace the plastic plugs. Put the faux blind back on the window and you are done!
